Guiding Questions:  We encourage you to provide guiding questions to your students to help them write their artist statement.  Below are suggested questions.  Feel free to use these, or adapt them to fit your students and their work.

Artwork description:
  • What types of colors, materials, and techniques did you use to create your art?
  • What images or symbols are included in your art?
  • If your art includes faces, what types of expressions do they have?

Connections to theme:
  • What specific words from the text inspired you?
  • What specific idea from the curriculum inspired you?
  • What does your artwork say about love?
  • What do you want others to think and feel when they see your art?

Tips for Writing an Artist Statement:
  • Jot down a key idea about you artwork in the center of a blank page. Then spend a few minutes writing down any words, phrases, feelings or related to that idea.
  • Begin writing your statement as if you were talking to someone about your art.
  • Have a classmate or teacher ask you questions about your art. As you answer the questions, take some notes.
